Ironclads, Submarines, and Blockade runners: the Maritime Archaeology of the Civil War

Dr. James Delgado is the second speaker for the "Coastal Connections" series presented by Ships of the Sea, Gray's Reef, and the Skidaway Institute of Oceanography. Through this presentation on maritime archaeology, Dr. Delgado will examine Civil War shipwrecks including the submarine H.L. Hunley, the ironclad USS Monitor, high-tech mapping of the USS Hatteras, work on a forgotten submarine, Explorer (wrecked in Panama), and the blockade runner Mary Celestia in Bermuda.  Q & A and light refreshments follow. 

Dr. Delgado is director of Maritime Heritage for NOAA's Office of National Marine Sactuaries.  He has led or participated in numerous shipwreck expeditions around the world.  In 2010, he was the principal investigator for an expedition to survey the RMS Titanic shipwreck site and create detailed three-dimensional maps of the Titanic.  Along with exploring marine archeology, Delgado has also shared his discoveries with worldwide audiences through articles, television, books, and media interviews.  From 2001 to 2006, he was host of the international documentary television series The Sea Hunters which aired on National Geographic and History television channels.

In the first of this speaker series connecting culture, science, and history on the Georgia Coast, Dr. Paul Pressly will discuss the culture and attitudes that made colonial Savannah seem closer to St. Kitts than Virginia.  Explore the waterfront community of sailors, sea captains, smugglers and citizens in the 1700s.  Q & A and light refreshments follow.
