Paperback, 249 pp
From the Publisher:
“The Savannah was something new under the sun. Her trans-Atlantic voyage of 1819 was the first ever made across any ocean by a vessel with a steam engine. She showed that it was possible, and safe, to use steam on the oceans of the world.”
- Preface
The successful voyage of the S.S. Savannah marked the beginning of a new maritime epoch – one in which ocean-going vessels were no longer dependent on the vagaries of wind and tide. Her maiden voyage to Europe and Russia astonished the world. When the Savannah arrived off Ireland, the Royal Navy thought the steaming vessel was on fire and pursued her, in vain. At Stockholm, the King of Sweden tried to buy her. And in Russia, the Captain and his gallant ship captivated the Tsar himself. Although she failed to attract any passengers or cargo on her first voyage (skeptics dubbed her a “steam coffin”), the Savannah definitively established the feasibility of oceanic steam travel.
