During World War II, America flexed it massive industrial muscle to crank out more than 2,700 Liberty Ships - fast-built freighters designed to take the war to Hitler and Tojo and carry the materials necessary for victory on the front lines. The men who sailed these ships literally took their lives in their own hands, as Merchant Marine sailors faced a casualty rate higher than any of the other branches of service. Equally heroic were the efforts of the thousands upon thousands of Americans who worked around the clock in eighteen shipyards nationwide to build these Ships for Victory.
